Fake Antivirus Software

This is to provide help with some of you who may be experiencing an influx of "Antivirus" programs popping up with notices that you are "infected." These programs go by many names: WinAntivirus Pro, Antivirus XP 2008, SpyAxe, SpySherrif, and others too countless to mention. Go ahead and post your questions or experiences here.

Yeah, I have this. How do you get rid of it?? It keeps popping up WinAntivirus 2008, and it keeps asking me to purchase the full version. What do I do?

DON'T PURCHASE IT! It's a hoax. My neighbor purchased it and she just ended up paying 40 bucks to have a virus on her system. I heard there are tools out there that remove this, but I haven't had any luck. Norton got rid of it somewhat on my system but it still pops up from time to time. I'm having a tough time with it.

I actually had to fix a computer that had this problem on it. They had installed so many fake programs that there were too many DLL's/Registry keys to completely remove all the crap they had built up on the system. I ended up just running a GParted LiveCD and partitioning the HDD and just moving over their precious images. I then just easily reinstalled it. :]
